Saraii Village

Saraii is a tourist destination, which promotes sustainable tourism. The name “Saraii” originates from the Hebrew language; and means “the essence”. In this context, at Saraii we hope to allow guests to experience the ‘true essence of Sri Lanka in its unadulterated form’. We hope to give the guests an opportunity to enjoy and immerse them in a truly authentic ‘Sri Lankan’ experience.

The basic differentiation between Saraii and other guest establishments is that we provide a more natural form of tourism as opposed to packaged tourism. Saraii allows tourists to enjoy themselves while being responsible of their surrounding environment. It allows the tourists to make conscious choices about how they wish to spend their time at Saraii.

At Saraii, a tourist can expect to feel the fine balance between nature and good living. A tourist will be inspired to make their own choices, while being made to understand the impact they make on their surroundings, making their holiday a sustainable one.

Saraii is situated in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka in Wirawila, Hambantota district. Wirawila has a small airport, which supports amphibious aircrafts and is in close proximity to many wild life sanctuaries. Namely they are Bundala, Yala, Wirawila, Udawalawe, Lunugamwehera and Debarawewa Sanctuaries. Situated in the dry zone, these sanctuaries are home to many birds, elephants, water buffalo, deer and many other large and small mammals.

The historic town of Tissamaharama is located about 5-10 mins away from Wirawila.  Tissamaharama is dominated by lotus-filled lakes, lush green paddy fields and giant dome-like Dagabas (Buddhist temples) dating back to the second century BC. The jungle shrine of Kataragama, located about 20-30 mins away has great religious and historical significance and brings together Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians each day to worship at its numerous temples. Each day, at specific times, Kataragama’s Hindu shrines come alive when poojas (devotions) are presented to the Gods. There is a perahara (procession) at Kataragama for the gods every year during July and August, which is a must see.

Saraii is also 15-20 minutes away from the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Kirinda a beautiful seaside village which is easily accessible by road from Saraii, where tourists can enjoy diving, whale watching and surfing, making Saraii a perfect location for those interested in marine experiences. The Sri Lankan government also plans on opening a new international airport in Maththala, just about 15 minutes away from Wirawila in 2012. Thus making Saraii easily accessible by air as well as by land.

Tourists who visit Saraii will be able to visit all these places, enjoy excursions, or just relax with a book at Saraii, depending on their preference. Come stay at Saraii to enjoy the true experience of Sri Lanka while being one with the environment.
